Role and Importance of Statistical Advocacy Statistical Advocacy at general level – To create awareness – To raise profile of statistics – To promote a culture of statistics Evidence-Based decision making in order to improve development outcomes – To make possible good governance – To make governments accountable to the people Statistical Advocacy for specific needs – To sensitize for a survey or census – To popularize the Statistical Act, etc. – To mobilize resources for NSDS implementation, etc.

Targets of Statistical Advocacy There is a need to target: – Government – Parliament – Businesses – Civil Society Organizations – Communities – General public

Types and Modalities of Statistical Advocacy Possible mechanisms for Statistical Advocacy includes: Country level: – Users and Producers for a – Members of parliament seminars – National Associations of Statisticians, – Friends and clubs for statisticians – African Statistics Day (ASD) every 18 November Global level – PARIS21 a joint initiative of OECD, UN System, IMF, World Bank – World Statistics Day (WSD) - Decision of the UN statistical Commission

Types and Modalities of Statistical Advocacy African Statistics Day (ASD) on18th November – Every year since 1993 – To promote statistics and to enlarge the statistics culture among the population, particularly among the decision makers. World Statistics Day (WSD), celebrated for the first time on 20 October 2010 (20 10 2010) – Decision of the UN Statistical Commission – To promote statistics world-wide
