Why downhill biking? Easy Friday/Saturday camp Good for young men of all biking abilities Great intro to mountain biking Enough dirt and rocks for the real experience Very little uphill to discourage them too soon Dirt roads, not trails; easier riding Many other roads and trails in San Diego Camp in the National Forest – little or no cost

PREPARATION Bikes in good working order Tires Brakes Helmets and water bottles Know the trail At least 3 adults needed – 2 to ride with boys and one to shuttle a car to pickup point Forest adventure pass ($5) Primitive camping equipment Tents Water Table, Chairs Cooking equipment

Route 1: Thing Valley Road to Fry Creek Campground By car or truck: I-8 to Pine Valley, left on Sunrise Highway past mile 22.5; right on Thing Valley Road. Camp along Thing Valley Road. By bike: 3.5 miles to locked gate Right on Fred Canyon 6.3 miles to Fry Creek Driver meets at Fry Creek Campground on Kitchen Creek Road About 10 miles; drops 2600 feet Option: ride another 4.5 miles down Kitchen Creek road (paved) to I-8

Route 2: La Posta Truck Trail

Route 2 From Thing Valley Road: 3.5 miles to locked gate at Fred Canyon Continue straight on Thing Valley 2 miles to La Posta Truck Trail Right on La Posta Truck Trail 6.2 miles to Old Highway 80 (The last 6.2 miles is relatively flat and sandy)
