Order of Operations Objective: To learn and use the Order of Operations to solve equations. Background Knowledge: What are the four basic Operations in math? Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division *Exponents *Parenthesizes / Grouping

Order of Operations When solving Orders of Operations you must follow these steps: 1 st Complete all operations in PARENTHESIZES 2 nd Complete all EXPONENTS 3 rd FROM left to right: MULTIPLICATION & DIVISION 4 th From left to right: ADDITION & SUBTRACTION

Substituting Variables with the Order of Operations What does it mean to substitute a variable? [if your not sure think of what it means to substitute something else, IE teachers, players on a team, etc.] Solve the equation when X= 3 (X + 7) / 2 (3 + 7) / 2 (10) / 2 = 5
