Planning services at The Children's Society LEAP Programme, Leeds Prepared by The Children’s Society LEAP Programme, for Yorkshire & Humber Regional Migration Partnership, 1st April 2011

LEAP Listening Empowerment Advocacy Participation

Planning Services at The Children’s Society LEAP Programme We need to quantify the need for services through providing statistics. Whilst anecdotal evidence of asylum seekers and refugees needs is important – funders want quantitative data analysis and predicted outputs

Barriers to identify statistics Where can I gather these stats from? Who is there locally that can support this? How can I identify current stats? How can I identify local figures? How can I pinpoint specific groups? How can I develop stats to meet my services needs?

How does LEAP Programme use statistics? Strategic reviews Strategic meetings profiling need Monitoring and evaluation Service development and planning Identifying emerging trends Annual reports Lobbying/Advocacy/Campaigns Funding applications

In Practice Build relationships with key local professionals in the sector: LEAP gain statistics from Social Services CART, UKBA, Education Leeds, Leeds City College, PAFRAS, YHRMP referring services and in the past Leeds City Council Asylum Team. Particular information LEAP’S have sought: age profiling of asylum seekers, family structure, postcodes of housing, what type of asylum support, country of origin, education provider, UASCs.

In Practice The biggest gap is identifying refugee figures in Leeds. Combine various sources of stats to present an overall local picture. Provide the ‘big picture’ stats through national figures. Keep monitoring and profiling your service users and identify any emerging trends  respond accordingly.

Due to the confidential nature of the data, slides 8-11 have been removed for web viewing.
