STUDENT LED CONFERENCES FEBRUARY 9-10-11

Creates a meaningful conference connecting your T-2-4 plan (post-high school) and adds parent involvement in the registration process. A student‐led conference allows you to take the lead on sharing progress, course planning, discussing next steps, and setting goals with your parents. PURPOSE

SLC PREPARATION December/January/February Seminars Focus on: preparing our SLC presentation, learning about course options for next year, and completing the registration form. Your Seminar teacher will be your LC advocate during your SLC. Each conference will be 20 minutes.

SLC SCHEDULE Tuesday, Feb. 9 Block schedule periods 1-3-5 No Seminar (we will have Seminar on Feb. 8 to finish preparing for your SLC) Classes end by 11:30am Lunch 11:30-12:00 Busses leave 12:00 Conferences: 1:00-3:00pm 4:00-7:30pm Wednesday, Feb. 10 Block Schedule periods 2-4-6 No PAWS Classes end by 11:30am Lunch 11:30-12:00 Busses leave 12:00 Conferences: 1:00-3:00pm 4:00-7:30pm Thursday, Feb. 11 All classes periods 1-6 Classes end by 11:30am Lunch 11:30-12:00 Busses leave 12:00 Conferences: 1:00-3:00pm

SCHEDULING We will use a program called VolunteerSpot to do most of the scheduling – this is an online service that will send an email to your parent so they can select a day and time for your SLC. We will add a link to LCTigers.com for parents to schedule. If your parent doesn’t have an email or access to the Internet, you and your Seminar teacher will call your parent.

SLC DOCUMENTS To support your SLC discussion with your parent(s) and Seminar teacher, you will complete four documents between now and February: 1. Progress Check on your classes/career goals 2. Enrichment Activities you are engaged in 3. Course/Registration Planning 4. Final Registration Form

PROGRESS CHECK ON YOUR CLASSES/CAREER GOALS Things to start thinking about before filling out this form next week: Career goals What level of post-high school education are you planning for (T-2-4/Military) Top schools you are looking at Your career pathway How you are performing in your classes Goals you can set for your academics 2 nd semester

CAREER PATHWAYS A Career Pathway is a way to group career choices with similar features. Each of the 5 pathways potentially have hundreds of careers that fit into them. Some careers fit easily into a single category, but others may fit into multiple pathways, while other careers may not fit into the main pathways.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES Things to start thinking about before filling out this form next week: Clubs/activities/sports you have participated in during high school Work and volunteer opportunities you have done Leadership roles you have taken on Setting goals to add more enrichment activities for yourself Scholarships and colleges put a great value on activities you do outside of your academic areas of study.

COURSE/REGISTRATION PLANNING Things to start thinking about before filling out this form next week: Success in prior classes (as reflected on your transcript) How you are selecting your courses for next year Selecting “stretch” classes How courses are connected to your career/T-2-4 choice

REGISTRATION FORM Things to start thinking about before filling out this form next week: Graduation requirements you still need to complete Making careful and deliberate course choices to avoid future schedule changes Understanding that you need to find balance between your academic, extracurricular, and social lives.

REGISTRATION FORM The registration form is the one SLC form that you will take with you to work on outside of Seminar. You’ll need to have your Math, English, and Science teachers sign off on your course choices. Please try to take care of this form. If you lose it or it becomes damaged, you can pick up a new one in the Career Center.

SUMMARY Next week, you will receive the packet to begin working on your SLC presentation. Start thinking about what classes you want to register for next year. If you have questions, talk to your current teachers to get their advice. Think about the career interests and T-2-4 goals you have and how they connect to your course choices.
