THE BAD NEWS: GREATEST LOSS IN ITALY’S ARTISTIC HERITAGE SINCE 1997 WHEN ASSISI WAS STRUCK BY A MODERATE EARTHQUAKE

INITIAL REPORTS The shallow (10.5 km),moderate- magnitude earthquake, 35 km from Bologna, followed by vigorous aftershocks, rocked northern Italy early Sunday morning, killing at least seven people, injuring dozens, and seriously damaging buildings, historic churches, bell towers and a medieval castle.
