Ratios and Percent cc.6.rp.1 cc.rp.3a Assignment #6
Essential Question: How do you write ratios and equivalent ratios?
2
Ratio A ratio is a comparison of two numbers by division. The two numbers in a ratio are called terms. A ratio can be written in several different ways Examples 5 dogs to 3 cats 5 to 3 5:3 5/3
3
Writing Ratios Use the table to write the following ratios 1
Writing Ratios Use the table to write the following ratios 1. pretzels to bagels chips 3 different ways 2. pretzels to the total party mix 3 different ways 3.bagel chips to peanuts 3 different ways Party Mix Make 8 cups 4 cups of pretzels 2 cups of bagel chips 1 cup of cheese crackers 1 cup of peanuts
4
Equivalent Ratios Ratios that name the same comparison. Find equivalent ratios by multiplying or dividing both terms of a ratio by the same number. Example 2/7 = 4/14 When multiplying the numerator and the denominator by 2 8/24=2/6 When dividing the numerator and the denominator by 4
5
Find Equivalent Ratios
Find the 2 equivalent ratio for each of the following ratios using multiplication and division. 3/12 5/25 8/24 6/9 9/45

Unit Rates 1/22/15 Assignment #9
How can you use unit rates to solve problems and make comparisons?
16
Comparing Prices Shana is at the grocery store comparing two brands of juice . Brand A costs $3.84 for a 16 ounce bottle Brand B costs $4.50 for a 25 ounce bottle. To compare the costs, Shana must compare prices for equal amounts of juice. How can she do this?
17
Complete the Tables Brand A Ounces Price $ 16 3.84 8 1.92 4 2 1
Brand B Ounces Price $ 25 4.50 5 1
18
Lets Reflect! How much does Brand A cost per ounce? How much does Brand B cost per ounce? Which is a better buy? Why? Describe another method to compare costs.
19
Try this Abby can buy an 8pound bag of dog food for $7.40 or a 4 pound bag of the same dog food for $5.38. which is a better buy?
20
Vocabulary Rate – a ratio of two quantities that have different units Unit Rate- a rate in which the second quantity is one unit. When the first quantity in a unit rate is sometimes called a unit price or unit cost.
21
Calculating Unit Rates
To find the unit rate, divide both quantities in rate by the same number so that the second quantity is 1 1. Maria pays $60 for 5 music lessons. What is the cost per lesson? $60/5 lessons 2. The cost of 3 candles is $ What is the unit price? $19.50/3 candles 3. Michael walks 30 meter s in 20 seconds. How many meters does Michael walk per second?

Fractions and Decimals Assignment #13
Step 1:When turning a fraction to a decimal you divide the numerator by the denominator Step 2: add a decimal and a zero to the dividend and then you add a decimal to the quotient Try these 17/25 14/20 3/8
24
Percent A percent is a ratio that compares a number to 100. The symbol % is used to show percent. For example 17% is equivalent to 17/100 17: to % is equivalent to 62.5/ : to 1oo
25
Writing a Percent as Fraction
Step 1: write the percent as a fraction (hint: the denominator is always 100) 15%= 15/100 Step 2: Simplify the fraction 15/100 Divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number 15÷5 100÷5 Simplified to 3/20
26
Percent to a Fraction 300% 300% as a fraction 300/100 Divide the numerator ÷100 Divide the denominator ÷1oo The fraction is simplest form 3/1
27
Percent to Fraction and Fraction to Decimal
10% Step 1 write as a fraction Step 2 simplify fraction Step 3 write as a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator

P Percent Problems Finding the percent of a number (2/4/15 assignment #14)
A sporting goods store received a shipment of 400 baseball gloves and 30% were left handed. How many left handed gloves were in the shipment?
33
Method 1 (finding the percent of a number)
Step 1 identify the parts Percent = Whole= Part= Step 2 find what is missing What is the problem asking for ? Step 3 Set up the problem 𝑖𝑠 𝑜𝑓 = 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑤ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒
34
Guided Practice A lacrosse team played 30 games and won 80% of the games. How many games did the team win? Step 1 Step 2 Step 3
35
Method 2 (finding a percent of a number)
A girls softball team has 3 pitchers. The pitchers make up 20% of the team. How many total players are on the softball team? Step 1: identify the parts Step 2: turn the percent into a decimal Step 3: multiply by the whole to find the part
36
Try these Use method 1( 𝑖𝑠 𝑜𝑓 = 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑤ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒 ) 20% of % of 40 Use Method 2 (multiplying percent and whole number) 75% of % of 45
