If you are a really bright person that can see ideals and possibilities, you’ve probably experienced perfectionism! It’s not necessarily a bad thing, it just needs to be handled effectively…

6 6Copyright (c) Michele Caron, 2011 Definition – Perfectionist There are many definitions for perfectionists, one is: “people who strain compulsively and unremittingly toward impossible goals and who measure their own worth entirely in terms of productivity and accomplishment”

8 8Copyright (c) Michele Caron, 2011 Positive Aspects of Perfectionism Can provide a lot of motivating energy Can lead to high achievement (even if you “suffer” from the negative aspects of perfectionism, you can still get great external results…May not be sustainable though!) Has perfectionism ever worked for the positive for you?

9 9Copyright (c) Michele Caron, 2011 Typical pitfalls of Perfectionism Procrastination Inability to complete projects Inability to feel satisfaction in your work or accomplishments Losing time/getting stuck on minor details All or nothing thinking (something is either perfect or no good at all) Feeling bad about yourself Fear of failure

11 11Copyright (c) Michele Caron, 2011 Remedies for negative aspects of perfectionism (discuss each one) Get rid of the shoulds Base your self esteem on who you are, not how you perform Plan ahead for what your “good enough” will be and stick to it Embrace mistakes – know that you will make them and make the most of them! Build your confidence
