TBL BPMs: electronics4 General scheme of the analog head electronics Digital (front-end) block Design by M. Gasior
5
TBL BPMs: electronics5 Tentative parameters of the BPMs for the TBL BPM analog bandwidth (BPM with associated electronics) 10 kHz -100 MHz (200 MHz is highly desirable) Beam position range of interest +/-5 mm horizontal and vertical Beam aperture diameter22.5 mm Overall mechanical length< 100 mm Number of BPM’s in TBL 18 Resolution at maximum current <5 m Overall precision <50 m Hans Braun, 24.11.2004 The BPM design for the DBL by M. Gasior cannot be applied directly. Modifications required: a)The dimensions of the BPM (IPU) must be reduced (by a factor of 0.6 approximately) b) The amplifier bandwidth should be broaden up to 200 MHz and attenuator should be added. Typical radiation levels<1000 Gray/year
6
TBL BPMs: electronics6 Work done (I) a) Amplifier design A: schematics, PCB and tests of the 1 channel b) IPU electronics: design and schematics ● Based on a previous design using AD8370. ● Necessary modifications to meet the requirements to the TBL BPMs have been done. ● The IC is not certified to sustain the existing radiation level.

TBL BPMs: electronics7 c) Amplifier c) Amplifier design B: PCB routing is in progress (to be finished in 2 weeks). The design accomplishes the following characteristics: –10 kHz -200 MHz bandwidth (to be tested in the lab) –Selectable gain (2 gains) –3 outputs: ΔH, ΔV and Σ –± 2 V output level –Differential or unipolar outputs ??? (TBD) –The amplifier can be used as a analog front-end A new feature: the designed amplifier is able to endure 100 Krads (certified by the IC manufacturer) Work done (II)

TBL BPMs: electronics8 Current status Design A A one-channel prototype has been designed (Design A), built and tested. Required characteristics has been achieved (digitally variable gain and bandwidth up to 750 MHz). Design B A design of a radiation tolerant version of the amplifier (Design B) has been worked out. A design of the IPU electronics has been done. The project is carried out with a financial support of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science.
