1 of 10 Introduction to Visual Sample Plan & Applications DQO Training Course Day 3 Module 21 Presenter: Sebastian Tindall (60 minutes)
2
2 of 10 Key Points n VSP is a user-friendly, graphical software tool for evaluating trade-offs between decision errors, sampling costs, and remediation costs n Alternative sampling designs can be reviewed and evaluated in real-time
3
3 of 10 Purpose of VSP The purpose of VSP is to make environmental sampling design reliable, cost effective, and as simple as possible - but not simpler
4
4 of 10 Quick Overview n Open a site map n Select a sample area n Select a sampling design n Specify error rates, action level, standard deviation, etc. n Note results on map, graph, and costs n Iterate with various designs until optimal n Take samples at x, y coordinates provided
5
5 of 10 Detailed Examples n Simple random sampling of one acre field n Systematic grid with random start sampling of one acre field n Hot spot sampling of one acre field n Optional: “stratified” simple random sampling n Optional: MARSSIM Room
6
6 of 10 VSP Demo Now we will see a demonstration of Visual Sample Plan, version 2.0
7
7 of 10 Conclusions n VSP helps us understand the consequences of our assumptions n VSP makes us more efficient in evaluating and utilizing environmental sampling designs n GIGO; VSP depends on you for input n VSP is helpless without domain-specific knowledge and professional judgement
