The Northwest Passage John Cabot – An Italian explorer sailing for England who searched for a northern route to Asia – He explored Newfoundland on his first voyage, and the Chesapeake Bay on the second before disappearing Giovanni de Verrazano – An Italian explorer sailing for France sailed along the Atlantic coast and discovered the Hudson River

The Northwest Passage Jacques Cartier – French explorer discovered the St. Lawrence River in present day Montreal, Canada Henry Hudson – An English explorer also searching for the Northwest Passage failed when sailing in the Arctic Ocean – When the English gave up on him, he sailed for the DUTCH and explored the Hudson River and New York

New France Samuel de Champlain – The French began to settle the Americas in the 1600s. – Champlain was the first to explore the lands along the St. Lawrence River, naming them Quebec, thus establishing France in Canada Jacques Marquette – – Lived in the French colonies and established 2 missions (churches) along the great lakes – He also decided to look for the Northwest Passage and found the Mississippi River – After following it to the Arkansas River, they were convinced that it flowed into the Gulf of Mexico, not the Pacific Ocean. However, the discovery of the Mississippi expanded French colonization

New Netherland Dutch West India Company – Trade with the Native Americans proved profitable, so the Dutch established a colony and a business – The Dutch expanded throughout the state of NY New Amsterdam – Modern Day New York City (Manhattan) – Peter Minuit purchased the island from Natives (many claim that the natives were tricked) New Netherlands was an ideal barrier to the English, keeping them from moving westward until 1664 when England captured it, naming it New York

French & Dutch Impact on Native Americans FRANCE & THE DUTCH – Traded with Native Americans and kept peace with them – Made ALLIANCES with the natives – Over-trapping of animals weakened the food chain causing land to be more valuable
