1. What is the definition of astronomy ? 2. How do we study space? 3. What do you know about space?
2
1. What is the big bang theory? (the scientific theory, not the show, smarty pants) ;) 2. What is a light year?
3
1. Describe the 3 different types of telescopes 2. What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
4
1. Introduction to astronomy 2. Electromagnetic spectrum 3. Types of telescopes
5
Astronomy: the scientific study of the universe
6
The Electromagnetic spectrum is an arrangement of energy waves based on their wavelength.
8
Telescopes collect and focus light, Telescopes can: Magnify - make objects appear larger Resolve - to see fine detail Gather Light - make faint objects look brighter
9
Refracting telescopes use lenses to focus light
10
Yerkes Observatory, University of Chicago Largest refracting telescope with a one meter lens
11
Reflecting telescopes use mirrors to focus light
12
Palomar Observatory monitored by Cal Tech Largest Reflecting telescope is at Gran Telescopio Canarias (Canary Islands, Spain – 34.1 feet aperture)
13
Radio telescopes detect radio waves Focuses the waves on an antenna, which absorbs and sends these waves to an amplifier, just like a radio antenna
14
Looking through air causes stars to twinkle and planetary detail to blur Bad “seeing” on this side Good “seeing” on this side
15
Best place for telescopes is in space! Hubble Space Telescope!!
16
Telescopes in space allow: Perfect seeing (no blurred images) The ability to see wavelengths of light (such as IR, UV, X rays, & gamma rays) blocked by the earth’s atmosphere
18
Space Probes:make close-up observations and obtain samples Shuttles: Human Spaceflight - Apollo moon missions, International Space Station
