3 Mira Costa High School, Computer Science Goals Learn fundamentals and broad programming concepts, such as Object Oriented Programming. Apply Java to real-world and practical applications. Complement and bridge to other MCHS courses such as Video Game Development, Math and Media. Gain insights into careers and future technologies. Contribute to the academic goals of MCHS. Prepare and Pass the Advanced Placement test in Computer Science.

4 Mira Costa High School, Computer Science Teacher Objectives/Metrics (my own selfish reasons) Extend Mira Costa’s academic dominance. High passing rate of the AP Computer Science Exam. Challenge of stepping up from teaching University of California to Mira Costa.

5 Mira Costa High School, Computer Science Rules All MBUSD / MCHS rules apply –No cell phones, ipods, ear-plugs, wearing of hoods or sunglasses, etc. Remove them when bell rings. Violation counts as tardy, even if you’re on-time. –Note: 3 tardies results in detention. –Be ready to learn Always bring a pencil, notebook and paper. –Leave PC’s off, if they are turned off.

6 Mira Costa High School, Computer Science Rules (continued) Be respectful, disciplined No food or drinks in the classroom Cheating – don’t! Only a calculator, scratch paper, pens and/or pencils, and the test itself. No restroom breaks during class Except on test-days after you have turned in your test.

Lockdown Lights out, curtains closed Fire Drill Follow teacher, stay together Rooms 7 – 12 assembly area is lower park lot, east side of auditorium.

8 Mira Costa High School, Computer Science Grading Quizzes / Tests –Every 2 – 3 weeks, total 40% of grade Mid-terms & Final –End of each term, each worth 15% of grade Homework –Weekly/semi-weekly, 20% of grade Special Projects –GridWorld 25 % 6 components to Grid World

9 Mira Costa High School, Computer Science Scoring Scoring on Homework / Tests / Special Projects, Mid-Terms, Final –20% style Appropriately commented Java code. Descriptive variable names, correctly indented, vertically spaced Java code. Correct English, clear and concise writing. Legible handwriting, including your own name. –80% of score will be actual work Grading on a curve
