3 About robotics 'Robot' – introduced by Karl Capek in R.U.R. (1921)  We’d call them androids  means ‘forced labor’  Robots conquer the world Electromechanical system that seems like it knows what it’s doing  Assembly lines  Sweeping floors  Driving Needs to have some sort of intelligence

4 Purpose? Increase the quality of life Perform tasks that are to  Dangerous  Repetitive  Precise  Hard to reach  Boring My philosophy  If it’s too much work for you, make a computer do it.

5 Ethics Humans rely on machines  Could they take over? The Matrix Isaac Asimov & Bill Joy  Hesitant about really smart robots Three Laws + 1  0) A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.  1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.  2) A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.  3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
