3
Expanding the Military FDR increased the defense budget Passed the Selective Training and Service Act Many members of minority groups joined the service, but were forced to serve in separate units Many women served in non-combat positions as well
4
The Economy - FDR created the War Production Board to figure out which companies switched to war production (ex. Ford motor company began making airplanes) - U.S. spent 321 billion dollars to finance the war; 41% of that money from higher taxes
5
The Economy (cont.) Wartime ended the massive unemployment in the U.S. Provided new job opportunities for women and members of minority groups Thousands of people moved to northern industrial cities (Chicago, Detroit, etc.)

Exit Slip/ Target Skill: Interpreting Charts 1. How much did we increase defense spending from 1945 to 2009? (We spent 83 billion in 1945) 2. Do you think it’s necessary to spend so much on national defense? Why? 3. How much did the war budget for Iraq and Afghanistan increase between 2003 and 2008? 4. Judging by the chart, what can we logically infer happened to defense spending in 2010 and 2011?
