REVIEW: EVENTS BEFORE In 1882: A triple alliance is formed between Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungry. Becomes known as the Central powers Another alliance is then formed in 1904 between France, Russia, and Britain July 1914: Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife are killed. Austria-Hungry gives Serbia an Ultimatum to meet. Serbia refuses. War breaks out between the two. Allies are called in to help. Month later… Germany declares war on Russia. Russia calls on France. France answers. Germany then declares war on France.

EARLY ON….. Germany invaded Belgium due to the Schlieffen Plan. This plan required them to go through Belgium and go south on the border of French lines. European powers including Belgium signed a treaty to guarantee Belgium's neutrality. Due to the invasion by Germany, Britain declared war on Germany on August 4, 1914. Also in August, Russia suffers a HUGE loss to Germany in the Battle of Tannenberg. Russia was poorly equipped and returns home to deal with their own Revolution taking place. In July of 1915 China now begins a war with Japan to try and claim them

WAR DRAGS ON… 1916 over 2 million soldiers die in the battle of Verdun and Somme By 1917 war fatigue, food and supply shortages, and death tolls began to affect the allied powers ability to fight. Russia has pulled out of the war and Lenin signed a treaty stating that Russia will no longer fight due to issues and revolt at home. It appears that Germany and her allies will win.

U.S. ENTERS THE WAR…. When the great war began, President Woodrow Wilson stated that the U.S. would remain neutral during this war. He did not want to get tangled in the alliance web Meanwhile Wilson was sending loans of materials, food, and money to Britain and France to assist them in their war efforts. Germany, knowing this, stated it would sink all ships in their seas. They ended up sinking a passenger ship called the Lusitania which had many American citizens present. America demanded pay back. Wilson started to prep the troops for war 1917 Germany now claims all out naval war with any ship in the Atlantic. Wilson asks Congress for permission so “begin a war to end all wars.” They agree and America declares war on Germany and Austria Hungry in 1917.
