3 + What is Bullying? What does bullying mean to you? Definition: “Bullying is when you keep picking on someone because you think you’re cooler, smarter, stronger or better than them.”

4 + Why is this a BIG problem? Kids who are bullied have a hard time standing up for themselves. They think the kid who bullies them is more powerful than they are. Bullying can make them: Sad, lonely, nervous or terrified Feel sick Have problems at both school and home

5 + What Does Bullying Look Like? How do you know you or others are getting bullied? Bullying often includes:  Teasing  Talking about hurting someone  Spreading rumors  Leaving kids out on purpose  Attacking someone by hitting or yelling

6 + Evidence The Health Department found that nearly 18% of High School Students in NYC have been bullied at school or over the internet. One in six victims of any type of bullying attempted hurting themselves

7 + Causes of Bullying What causes kids to pick on others?  They think they are better than others  They think it’ll help them fit in  They want to copy their friends  They don’t feel good about themselves, so they want to hurt others

8 + What anti-bullying policies does our school have? Respect For All To maintain a safe and supportive learning environment that is free from harassment, intimidation and/or bullying and discrimination on account of actual or perceived race, color, citizenship/immigration status, religion, creed, national origin, disability, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or weight Respect For All Brochure

9 + Finding Solutions What are some ways we can work together to solve this problem?  Launch an Awareness Campaign (engaging parents and students)  Establish a culture of acceptance, tolerance and respect  Create school wide rules that are enforced  Create a bullying reporting system  Use role-playing to teach kids skills on how to handle bullying  As part of the curriculum student should learn positive communication skills
