Warm Up Work Silently. Ask Ms. H questions!
What does it mean “to evaluate”? What does it mean if a college basketball recruiter is “evaluating a player”? Would you rather be able to hit the same spot on the backboard every time OR always score an average of 40 points? 15 minutes
2
Unit 1 Grandmasters 3 minutes
3
Chemistry Tracker What’s a tracker? What’s a GLE?
- To track your success in Unit 1 - It will show you how well you did on each GLE What’s a GLE? Resume- shows your experience from that experience you got skills Shows people who are trying to hire you why you would be a good person for the job. This is the same thing It will track how you do on each GLE to see if you have the skills you should have for chemistry. 80% or above it considered mastery….mastery means?? Master P, Grandmaster Flash? 1 person to pass out calculators; I pass out exams -
4
The BIG GOAL: 80% Mastery of ALL GLEs
5
Why 80% Mastery? Graduate high school Pass the GEE Science Exam
Graduate college Solve your own problems $$$
6
If I didn’t get mastery, is that it?
No! Get 20 min tutoring Retake the GLEs you didn’t master Raise your grade Increase future opportunities!
7
Group Work: Complete Resumes
Introduce yourself to your team Always help each other, but work only with your team. Keep your voices below the music. RAISE your hand to ask questions. Stack your group’s TESTS & Résumé I will pick them up
8
Goal Sheets I believe you all 1) CAN and 2) WILL master Chemistry
Pick 1 goal for yourself Relate that goal to mastering Chemistry Complete your goal sheet Then, EARN IT
9
Done with Unit 1… Unit 2: Matter Test on Friday
10
The study of MATTER and its CHANGES
Chemistry The study of MATTER and its CHANGES
11
Criteria To be MATTER it… must have mass (be made of stuff)
must have volume (take up space) Spend time changing the definition of matter to the
12
Does this matter? count down. 3-2-1 YES or NO
13
Does this matter? book
14
Does this matter? car
15
Does this matter? thoughts

Does this matter? Sodium hydroxide

So…. Chemistry is about studying STUFF in the world and how that stuff can change.

Accuracy, Precision and Percent Error
30
Accuracy = getting the right answer
ON AVERAGE Other words for “right answer” True value Accepted value Actual value Textbook value Literature value
31
Accurate or not? Average = 6.0 Literature Value= 6.03 Trial
Measurement 1 7.1 2 5.9 3 8.0 Average = 6.0 Literature Value= 6.03
32
Precision = getting the SAME answer again and again
33
Precise or not? Average = 5.53 Textbook Value= 7.10 Trial Measurement
2 5.54 3 5.52 Average = 5.53 Textbook Value= 7.10
34
Accurate? Precise? Both? Neither?
Trial Measurement 1 5.5 2 10.0 3 4.5 Average = 10.0 Accepted Value= 20.5
35
Accurate? Precise? Both? Neither?
Trial Measurement 1 73.7 2 73.4 3 73.6 Average = 73.6 Accepted Value= 73.57
36
Percent error Percent error= Tells you how far off your measurement is. Not doing it. Add Key Points, add IP questions. ~ 10
37
Accuracy, Precision and % Error
Percent Error %E = Vactual – Vmeasured X 100 Vactual | | Addd slide what is acceptable percent error
38
Accuracy, Precision and % Error
Percent Error Formula includes absolute value sign You may never have a negative answer with % error, just drop the negative!
39
Accuracy, Precision and % Error
Measuring a string you get 18 cm, but Ms. Hughes tells you the string is actually 20 cm long.
40
Accuracy, Precision and % Error
[(20 – 18)/20] x 100
41
Accuracy, Precision and % Error
[(20 – 18)/20] x 100 = 10%
42
Accuracy, Precision and % Error
Measured: 88 mL Actual: 83 mL
43
Accuracy, Precision and % Error
6.0%
44
Accuracy, Precision and % Error
Measured: 140 g Actual: 122 g
45
Accuracy, Precision and % Error
14.8%
46
Accuracy, Precision and % Error
Measured: 3438 m Actual: 4888 m
47
Accuracy, Precision and % Error
29.7%
48
Stations! 8 total Answer all on separate sheet of paper
Return calculators when finished Work on your own If finished early, start binder organization

Homework Top Ten: how’d we do?
Half sheet of accuracy + precision, % error practice
