Think About It! You and everyone you know are Italian. You are all proud of the language, culture, and history you share. But you live in a part of Italy that is ruled by Austria. Recently you have heard of a movement to unite all Italians into one kingdom to be ruled by all Italians. Will you support such an effort?

Nationalism and Colonial Empires The Big Idea Nationalism led to the creation of powerful nation-states that competed with each other to build large empires throughout the world. Main Ideas Nationalism sparked independence movements in Europe and the unification of Italy and Germany. Colonial empires grew in the late 1800s as industrialism led to a new wave of imperialism.

Main Idea 1: Nationalism sparked independence movements in Europe and the unification of Italy and Germany. Nationalism, a devotion and loyalty to one ’ s country, was a powerful force in the 1800s. Nationalist uprisings occurred due to resentment of French domination during Napoleon ’ s rule. –Some succeeded while others failed. Greece became independence in 1829. Revolutions of 1848 in France, Austria, German Confederation, and Italian States largely failed. Later, Italy and Germany unified several nation-states to form their own united countries.

Italy Camillo di Cavour became prime minister of Sardinia and drove Austrians from the north. Giuseppe Garibaldi gathered followers and overthrew the government in Sicily. Cavour and Garibaldi joined their lands together to unify Italy in 1861. Italy and Germany Unify Germany Otto von Bismarck, the Prussian prime minister, built a strong army and defeated Denmark and Austria. Southern states joined with Germany when Prussia waged war against France. German Empire was proclaimed in 1871 under the rule of King William I. Began to focus on militarism and colonialism.
