Good Afternoon!!! 1.NVC 2.Intro to Imperialism 3.Clash of Cultures Essential Question: How did Europeans view the new cultures and civilizations they encountered?

Political and Economic Power in Europe– Post-Nationalism Great Britain and Germany France Austria, Italy, and Russia

Imperialism c. 1850 Nationalism + Industrialization = Europe stronger than ever – New industrial Nation- States compete for overseas empires in Africa, Asia, and Middle-East – Imperialism: strong countries creating empires by conquering weaker ones

Clash of Cultures Europeans encounter 1,000+ different ethnic groups in Africa alone – Europeans viewed these natives as “primitive,” “savage,” and “backwards” – “I must say this race is wholly evil and bereft of civilization. Of their customs we have nothing to learn but the verification that they are, indeed, utterly primitive, bizarre, and lacking in all aspects that define men as men.”

The Nacirema: A Case Study

What rituals of the Nacirema do you find the most fascinating/bizarre? Name AT LEAST TWO. Why did you choose these? Imagine you are a European explorer living in the 1800s and just encountered one of the Nacirema. How would you react? What would you think of this person?

Nacirema: American Now that you know the Nacirema are simply Americans, why do you think you thought their customs were so strange? What lesson can we learn from this?
