What is Density?
2
Density is… The ratio of the MASS of a substance to it’s VOLUME
3
Mass Is… A measure of how much matter is in an object
4
How is Mass Measured? Use a balance Measured in grams (g)
5
Volume is… The amount of space that matter occupies. l x w x h = volume
6
Volume is… Measured in the metric unit cubic centimeter or centimeter cubed or (cm 3 ) 1 cm 3 = 1 ml 8 cm 3 = 8 ml 15 ml = 15 cm 3
7
Volume A liquid is measured using a graduate cylinder. Liquids are measures in milliliters (ml)
8
The Formula for Density Density = Mass (g) / Volume (cm 3 )
9
What else do I need to know? Density of Water is 1 1 1 1 g / cm3 When does something Float? When it’s density is less than 1 g/cm3 When does something sink? When it’s density is more than 1 g/cm3
10
Measuring Density… Regular shaped objecrts Regular shaped objecrts l x w x h = cm 3 l x w x h = cm 3
11
Measuring Density… IRREGULAR Shaped Objects “displacement Method” 1. Fill a graduate cylinder to a whole # 2. Carefully drop object into the graduate 3. Subtract the difference cm 3 = volume cm 3 = volume
