Do now: 1. Take out homework and monitors will collect. 2. How does energy flow through an ecosystem? 3. Describe this symbiotic relationship

What three atoms are all living things made of? Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen

Carbon, oxygen and hydrogen Did you know that the same carbon, oxygen and hydrogen that are currently in your body were once a part of a dinosaur?

Aim How did atoms from dinosaurs get into our bodies?

Photosynthesis Process where producers make their own food Carbon dioxide + water + sunlight -> glucose + oxygen CO 2 + H 2 0 + sunlight -> C 6 H 12 O 6 + O 2 All chemical equations must be balanced How many CO 2 molecules are in this equation to make it balanced?

Balanced photosynthesis equation 6 CO 2 + 6H 2 0 + sunlight -> C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 What happens to the glucose when a herbivore eats it? Herbivore breaks down glucose to release energy which it uses for life processes and growth

Cellular respiration When glucose is broken apart, it forms CO 2 and water This process is called cellular respiration C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 -> 6 CO 2 + 6H 2 0 + energy

How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration related? They are the opposites of each other! Photosynthesis 6 CO 2 + 6H 2 0 + sunlight -> C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 Cellular respiration C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 -> 6 CO 2 + 6H 2 0 + energy

Cellular respiration All cells in all living things perform cellular respiration What is the energy released in cellular respiration used for? Life processes (growth, metabolism, regulation, etc)

Photosynthesis Plants perform photosynthesis only during the day but perform cellular respiration during the day and night. Why? Require light energy to make glucose Although some of the glucose is used for energy, some is used to make other molecules like fats and proteins

Carnivore eats Herbivore where does carbon go? Some carbon molecules are incorporated into the carnivore’s body Some are broken down by cellular respiration and release carbon dioxide. Decomposers feed upon waste products and remains of plants and animals. They also perform cellular respiration and release carbon dioxide.

What happens to all the carbon dioxide that is produced? Plants can use it How? Plants will combine carbon dioxide with water using the energy of the sun to synthesize glucose during photosynthesis

Which fish will survive longer? Why?

Answer these questions with a partner How is oxygen produced by plants? How is oxygen used by plants and animals? How are the carbon and oxygen cycles intertwined?

Summary How did carbon and oxygen atoms from dinosaurs get into our bodies? – Carbon and oxygen is constantly being cycled How do carbon and oxygen atoms flow through an ecosystem? – Carbon and oxygen are recycled through an ecosystem

Homework Miller and Levine. Read pages 74-77. Do page 80, questions 1 and 5

Bottle ecosystem observations Check on your ecosystem and make observations Talk with your lab partners to make sure that you all have the materials and the methods that you used to set up the ecosystem in preparation for writing this section.
