English I 14 October 2015

Yesterday will not happen again. Your grade is attached to your seat. If you get up without my approval, you lose points. Follow directions the first time they are given; that means you must listen. Be in the classroom seated with your journal open and something to write with as soon as the bell rings. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. Use appropriate language; no put-downs, teasing, or other inappropriate words.

Bell ringer: He Fed his parents Deer’s Milk " In the Zhōu dynasty lived man named Tán whose nature was very filial. His parents were old, and both suffered from a sickness of the eyes [for the cure of which] they desired to drink deer’s milk. Tán therefore disguised himself in a deerskin and went to a herd of deer deep in the mountains to obtain deer’s milk to give his parents. Some hunters saw him were about to shoot him, when Tán revealed himself to them to avoid [being shot]. There is a poem which praises him, saying: His elderly parents want deer’s milk, So he wears a coarse fur garment; If he had not spoken out loud, He would have borne back arrows.

There is a poem which praises him, saying: “His elderly parents want deer’s milk, So he wears a coarse fur garment; If he had not spoken out loud, He would have borne back arrows.” Explain what values are being communicated in this story? How are they similar or different to Two Kinds?

If you have not read the story, you must start now. If you have read the story, you must answer the questions We will have a short quiz on this story on Friday; it will be as simple as the Necklace quiz. USE YOUR TIME WISELY IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GRADE.

These questions are to be done individually in the following manner: In complete silence In complete sentences Using textual evidence to support your answers to the questions And in the thoughtful manner that I demonstrated for you yesterday

2) Look closely at the passage where the speaker gets her hair cut for the first time. What may be the family’s economic standing? Quote the specific lines in the text and tell me why that supports your answer to the question. 3) “As one digs deeper into the national character of the Americans, one sees that they have sought the value of everything in the world only in the answer to this single question: how much money will it bring in?” (39). This quote is from Alexis de Tocqueville, a French political theorist who studied the workings of democracy in post-revolutionary America. While this particular quote dates back to 1831, one could argue that its meaning remains significant today. First, in your own words, tell me what are the implications of Tocqueville’s quote? Next, please tell me how this quote relates to both the speaker and the speaker’s mother. In this answer, you must cite a direct quotation from the text in order to support your answer.

4) If you’re not familiar with the magazine Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, I will tell you that it is a magazine that deals with situations and people that seem so unrealistic that it often makes the reader suspicious about the truth of its claims. A. First, tell me how the speaker’s mother used Ripley’s Believe it or Not!. Cite a specific line from the text that seems to come from this magazine. B. After, please tell me how the speaker’s mother’s practice of using all these magazines emotionally affected her daughter? You need cite the text to receive full credit, but to help you find the answer, think about this: How would this practice make you feel? 5) Think about this quote: “It was like a stiff, embraceless dance between her and the TV set.” First, tell me what is literally happening around the moment this quote occurs in the text. Next, write a detailed response on the following question: What does this quote suggest about the mother’s susceptibility (look it up) to media influence? Please reference the a specific related moment in your answer and explain how it relates to what you’re trying to communicate.
