2. What is the Intel ® Teach Program Getting Started Course? -A professional development offering for classroom/subject-matter teachers with little or no experience with computers, in need of basic skills and introduction to project approaches  Develops 21st century teaching and learning skills and approaches, such as student-centered instruction, critical thinking, and collaboration  Involves the planning, doing, reviewing, and sharing of meaningful and relevant teacher activities  Requires the development of individual action plans detailing how teachers will apply their new skills and approaches to improve their productivity and enhance their professional growth over time

3. Intended Audience Classroom teachers who: Have little or no computer experience Need or desire to learn computer basics and 21st century teaching and learning approaches May have limited access to computers in their classrooms and homes May go on to take the Intel ® Teach Essentials Course Note: preparing such teachers to teach computer skills to students or to develop technology-infused lessons for their students to do is not a primary goal of this course.

Module Topics Day 1 (8 hours) Module 1: Developing 21st Century Skills Module 2: Learning Computer Basics and the Internet Module 3: Fostering Critical Thinking and Collaboration Day 2 (8 hours) Module 4: Discovering Word Processing Module 5: Applying Word Processing Module 6: Discovering Multimedia Module 7: Applying Multimedia Day 3 (8 hours) Module 8: Discovering Spreadsheets Module 9: Applying Spreadsheets Module 10: Developing 21 st Century Approaches Module 11: Planning and Doing Your Action Plan (introduced) Day 4 (4 hours) Module 11: Planning and Doing Your Action Plan (continued) Module 12: Reviewing and Sharing Your Action Plan

Course Content Within each technology area:  Teachers spend four hours during the course of two, 2-hour modules  Teachers begin with a technology introduction, exploration, and discussion  Teacher next complete a required activity  Teachers then select and complete at least one relevant elective activity  Teachers conclude by sharing their work with colleagues and reflecting/discussing practical issues and applications

6. Course Content: Word Processing ActivityDescription Assessment Handout + A handout involving numbered and bulleted lists, line spacing, text formatting, and tabs. Weekly Lesson Planner A table showing a teacher’s lessons and activities for a week. Page layout/formatting and some form toolbar functions would be featured. NewsletterA single-page document detailing student activities and learning for one week (or month). Involves page layout, text columns, paragraph formatting, text styles, and working with pictures and clip art. DiagramAn image is inserted and the parts of that image are labeled with text boxes and arrows. Other text and paragraph formatting skills could be addressed through descriptive text. CertificateA graphics-oriented activity to celebrate student achievement and learning.

7. Course Content: Multimedia ActivityDescription Curriculum Preview + A presentation (perhaps used for an open house or back-to-school night) that explains what students will be learning in the year or semester ahead. Student of the Week A presentation that celebrates the accomplishments of a student (or group of students). Instructional Lesson A branching presentation that teachers develop to teach content in a way that is engaging to students. Classroom Rules and Expectations A branching presentation that informs students of classroom rules and teacher expectations relative to completion of assignments, participation, and so forth. YearbookA presentation that could be used to review what students have learned during the year and to celebrate their achievements.

8. Course Content: Spreadsheets ActivityDescription Grade Book + A worksheet that teachers use to enter grade information, perform calculations, and format. They can also generate appropriate column and line charts based on data. Classroom Inventory A worksheet containing an inventory of classroom items, such as desks, computer equipment, books, and supplies, the quantity of each item, and the cost. Seating ChartA worksheet that teachers use to create a seating chart for a substitute teacher. The comment feature is used to create rollovers that contain helpful details about certain students. PictographA worksheet that teachers complete using statistical data related to the content they teach. A pictograph is created using pictures and symbols to make the data easier to analyze. Roll BookA linked worksheet that teachers add to their existing Grade Book. This activity shows how information can be linked between different worksheets in the same spreadsheet.

9. Course Structure and Implementation -Senior Trainer/Master Teacher Training Consists of 12 modules for a total of 28 in-class instructional hours + homework hours – Guidance given to support an expanded version for a total of 32 in-class instructional hours + homework hours -Participant Teacher Training Consists of 12 modules for a total of 28 in-class instructional hours + homework hours – Guidance given to support an expanded version for a total of 32 in-class instructional hours + homework hours Implementation Models Consecutive: Three 8-hour days (+ breaks/meals) and one 4-hour day for a total of 3 ½ days – Guidance given to support an expanded version of four 8-hour days (+ breaks/meals) Distributed: Several hours over many weeks (requires more homework) Eligibility: For Master Teachers: Highly skilled with computer Literacy For Participant Teachers Little or no knowledge of Computers Instructional Mix Direct instruction Self-reflection or individual work on a training exercise, activity, or action plan Hands-on activity work with software Discussion and team work
