1
BASIC STRUCTURE OF A CELL MS. GAYNOR AP BIOLOGY/ CHAPTER 6 (PART 1)
2
FIRST TO VIEW CELLS In 1665, Robert Hooke used a microscope to examine a thin slice of cork (dead plant cells) What he saw looked like small boxes
3
FIRST TO VIEW CELLS Hooke is responsible for naming cells Hooke called them “CELLS” because they looked like the small rooms that monks lived in called Cells
4
ANTON VAN LEEUWENHOEK In 1673, Leeuwenhoek (a Dutch microscope maker), was first to view organism (Living things) Leeuwenhoek used a simple, handheld microscope to view pond water & scrapings from his teeth
5
BEGINNING OF THE CELL THEORY In 1838, a German botanist named Matthias Schlei d en concluded that all p lants were made of cells Schleiden is a cofounder of the cell theory
6
BEGINNING OF THE CELL THEORY In 1839, a German zoologist named Theodore Schw a nn concluded that all a nimals were made of cells Schwann also cofounded the cell theory
7
BEGINNING OF THE CELL THEORY In 1855, a German medical doctor named Rudolph V ircho w observed, under the microscope, cells dividing He reasoned that all cells come from other pre-existing cells by cell division
8
CELL THEORY 1. All living things are made of cells 2. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in an organism Basic unit of life 3. Cells come from the reproduction of existing cells Using cell division
9
CELL TYPES Three Basic types of cells include: Animal Cell (Eukaryote) Plant Cell (Eukaryote) Bacterial Cell (Prokaryote) **SMALLEST
10
NUMBER OF CELLS Although ALL living things are made of cells, organisms may be: Unicellular – composed of one cell Multicellular - composed of many cells that may organize into tissues, etc.
11
MULTICELLULAR ORGANISMS Cells in multicellular organisms often specialize (take on different shapes & functions)
12
CELL SPECIALIZATION Cells in a multi- cellular organism become specialized by turning different genes on and off This is known as DIFFERENTIATION
13
ALL CELLS… Contain 4 basic cell structures: Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Ribosomes DNA **not an organelle
14
PROKARYOTES – THE FIRST CELLS Simplest and smallest type of cell Includes bacteria NO nucleus NO/FEW organelles 1 Single, circular chromosome Think: “Pro” athlete plays with 1 ball
15
PROKARYOTE S Nucleoid region (center) contains the DNA (NO nulceus) Surrounded by cell membrane & cell wall (made of peptidoglycan) Contain ribosomes in their cytoplasm to make proteins Has cilia for reproduction and flagella for movement
16
EUKARYOT ES All eukaryotic cells HAVE: a Nucleus membrane-bound organelles These cell types includes: protists fungi plants animals More complex type of cells
17
TWO MAIN TYPES OF EUKARYOTIC CELLS Plant Cell Animal Cell
