By Helen Colliton THE SOUNDS OF MUSIC: A SOUND EXPERIMENT

 What kind of feelings can it make you feel?  What do you like to do while listening to music?  Can music move you?  Can it make you move? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF WHEN YOU THINK OF MUSIC?

 Music has the ability to move people emotionally, but it also makes people want to move physically  For example:  Tapping feet to the beat  Clapping hands  Singing along  exercise  etc. MUSIC AND MOVEMENT

 Are you aware of the sounds you make when you move to music?  Do little sounds that you make while listening to music inadvertently become part of your music listening experience?  If you separate the conventional “music” that you intend to listen to and the sounds that are created from listening to the music, what kind of sounds do you get?  Do they mimic the music or make a song of their own? MOVEMENT MAKES SOUND

 Obtain an audience of 4 people  Make a playlist of shortened songs that your audience would want to move to  Have audience sit around a table with a recording device and listen to playlist with headphones  Instruct the audience to move freely to and with the music; they can make sounds when they are moved to make sounds  Record the sounds created from music THE PROCESS

 September- Earth, Wind, and Fire  Remix to Ignition- R. Kelly  He’s a Pirate- Hans Zimmer  Countdown- Beyonce  Hey Ya- Outkast  Songs are familiar to the audience and upbeat, encouraging interaction  However, audience does not know what songs are going to be beforehand  https://soundcloud.com/hcolliton/the-sound-of-music https://soundcloud.com/hcolliton/the-sound-of-music THE SONGS

 I thought the most interesting song sounds were from He’s a Pirate by Hans Zimmer  I definitely did not expect this because there are no lyrics and it’s less of a traditional “party” song than the others  I was surprised that the very popular song Remix to Ignition did not get that much of a response  Could its lesser response be due to it’s slower pace?  Songs with more of a drum and bass presence elicited more of a response  Possibly because it gave the audience sound instructions that they could easily create by hitting the table EXPECTATIONS AND RESULTS

 A big thanks to the sound volunteers  Sara DeRosa  Talora Martin  Daniel Goldstein  Nick Roberson  Thank you to Abby for letting me borrow her fancy microphone THANK YOU
