Attendance Go to: http://goo.gl/BvCzSw Go to: http://goo.gl/BvCzSwhttp://goo.gl/BvCzSw Our Section Code is 1212 –”Middle School Grades” Our Section Code is 1212 –”Middle School Grades” “SBAC: What Does it Look Like for 11 th Graders?” Section Code is 1312. “SBAC: What Does it Look Like for 11 th Graders?” Section Code is 1312.

First Essential Question Where are the bathrooms and can you find them in the appropriate amount of time? Where are the bathrooms and can you find them in the appropriate amount of time?

Essential Questions What are the differences and similarities of the CST and SBAC? What are the “Four Claims” and what are they used for? What are the different types of SBAC questions and how are they different from CST-type questions? How are they scored?

A Little Activity A’s will write down things that make the CST and SBAC the same. B’s will write down things that make the CST and SBAC different. A’s and B’s share their thoughts Each table will report out one same and one difference between the CST and SBAC

Possible Similarities Both are tests… …and have questions. Untimed Untimed Accommodations for Special Education Multiple Choice Questions Have Test Administrators and Proctors Is reported to the State…and the World

Differences CST Bubbling In Fixed Form (test booklet) Paper-Pencil, test booklet No tech No calculators SBAC Keyboarding skills, drag and drop, line drawing, split screen page navigation Computer Adaptive Laptop, tablet, desktop Animated graphics, charts, and graphs Calculators on select problem

Differences CST Questions: Basically recall and reproduction Basic skills/concept s SBAC Questions: Critical thinking, problem solving. DOK levels Recall Basic Skills Strategic Thinking Extended Thinking

Differences CST Proficiency Levels Advanced Proficient Basic Below Basic Far Below Basic SBAC Achievement Levels Demonstrates thorough understanding Demonstrates adequate understanding Demonstrates partial understanding Demonstrates minimal understanding

Differences CST Reporting Time: Months! SBAC Reporting Time: Weeks

I will show you a test question that is either from the CST or SBAC. Using your phone, text the test you think the question is from. Time to Play…Name That Test

Implementation Smarter Balanced is ready for implementation in the 2014-15 school year.

Introduction to the SBAC Assessment http://sbac.portal.airast.org/

Student Interactive Assessment

CAT- Computer Adaptive Testing

Adaptive Testing The test is designed to adapt to the knowledge provided by the student and modify the questions based on the input of right and wrong answers.

Sample Questions

Things to Remember Students must feel comfortable asking for help. Students need us to understand the basics of the testing process. The SBAC is not a timed test.

Navigating the Test

Test Item Types MC-Multiple Choice, Single Correct Response MS-Multiple Choice, Multiple Correct Response EQ- Equation/Numeric MA-Matching Tables DD-Drag and Drop HS-Hot Spot G-Graphing GI-Graphing Interactive ST-Short Text TI-Fill-in tables

TI-Fill In Tables This type of problem requires that students type the correct answer in the space provided. Students must remember to reduce fractions.

DD-Drag and Drop Dragging and dropping the correct answer choice into the space provided

MS-Multiple Choice, Multiple Correct Response Multiple answers satisfy the question

HS-Hot Spot Students click and highlight the portion of the container that will be shaded.

Scientific Calculator

Calculator Usage Students must feel comfortable using the calculator tool. Not all test questions will allow the use of calculators Students with a IEP or a 504 Plan may use a calculator if it is written on their modified plan.

Assessment Consortium: Students are required to receive graph paper for his or her scratch work. Students are allowed breaks of no more than 20 minutes. Designated supports (available when indicated by an adult or team), and accommodations (available need is documented in an Individualized Education Program – IEP or 504 plan).

Types of SBAC Sample Questions

Types of SBAC Questions

Review Answers then Submit Test Before submitting the test remind students to review the questions.

The 4 Claims of SBAC

Outrageous Claims

Claims according to SBAC “A broad statement that will outline the outcomes achieved with mastery of the standards within it.”* *Riverside County Office of Education

“Hey, if we can get the kids to master the standards, then the outcome is looking good!”* Or as I like to say… *Steve Morris

Here are the Very Attainable Claims by SBAC Claim #1 : S tudents can explain and apply mathematical concepts and carry out mathematical procedures with precision and fluency. OR… Reader’s Digest Version: Can they tell you the concepts, apply it, and do it accurately? Claim #1 deals with Concepts and Procedures

Claim #2 Students can solve a range of complex well- posed problems in pure and applied mathematics, making productive use of knowledge and problem-solving strategies. OR… Can they solve a word problem (not really) Can they attack a problem using prior tools and knowledge? (for real) Claim #2 deals with Problem Solving

Claim #3 Students can clearly and precisely construct viable arguments to support their own reasoning and to critique the reasoning of others. OR… Twitter Version: Can they tell you what they did and back it up? Claim #3 deals with Communicating Reasoning

Claim #4 Students can analyze complex, real world scenarios and can construct and use mathematical models to interpret and solve problems Texting Version: IDK Can they take a challenging real world problem, analyze it, apply math models to it and solve it? Claim #4 is about Modeling and Data Analysis

Ok, that’s nice…but how are they used? Claim Target(s) DOK StandardsItem Types Assessment targets that further clarify the knowledge and specifics skills that cross over standards 1-Recall 2-Skill/ Concept 3-Strategic Thinking 4-Extended Thinking MC MS EQ MA TI DD HS G GI ST Claim 1 Claim 2 Claim 3 Claim 4

Scoring the SBAC

Computer Adaptive Portion Scores vary according to the type of question A student can receive partial credit on some of the questions Scored by computer

Performance Task Will be scored by humans You will be paid $50 for each test you score, not to exceed $5000. Not really

Great Teaching is Great Teaching, no matter the test or the Standards

Learn from other people’s mistakes because You don’t live long enough to make them all yourself.

We would like to take this time for you to get acquainted with a practice test of your choice. On a post it note, write any concerns, thoughts you might have after interacting with the practice test. http://goo.gl/hx4G2j
