Science: Earth’s Changing Surface Chapter 3 Erosion & Deposition
2
Section 1 Earth’s Changing Surface Erosion is the process b which natural forces move weathered rock & soil from one place to another A landslide is a very rapid type of erosion Gravity, running water, glaciers, waves, & wind can all cause erosion Sediment is the material moved by erosion Deposition occurs where the agents of erosion lay down sediment This changes the shape of the land
3
Weathering Weathering, erosion, and deposition act together in a cycle that wears down and builds up Es surface Sometimes they work slowly At other times they work more quickly Gravity is the force that moves rock and other materials downhill. Gravity causes mass movement The diff types of MM include landslides, mudslide, slump, and creep
4
Landslides, mudflows… Landslides are the most destructive kind of mass movement Some contain large rocks but many do not Mudflows are the rapid downhill movement of water, rock & soil A slump is when a mass of rock and soil suddenly slips down a slope This is one in which the material moves together Creep is the very slow downhill movement or rock & soil
