What is the Internet? A worldwide collection of computer networks that links millions of computers by – Businesses (.com.net) – the government (.gov) – educational institutions (.edu) – Organizations (.org) – Individuals (.com.net)

The internet is connected using – Modems – Telephone lines – Television cables – And other communications devices and media – Cell phones – PDA, etc. What is the Internet?

Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that has a permanent connection to the Internet backbone – (a collection of high speed data lines that connect major computer systems located around the world. – Dial up, DSL, high speed cable, etc. What is the Internet?

What is the World Wide Web? The part of the internet that supports multimedia and consists of a collection of linked documents. The web relies on Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to support multimedia HTTP is a set of rules for exchanging text, graphic, sound, video and other multimedia files

What is a Web Site? A related collection of web pages that is created and maintained by an individual, company, educational institution, or other organization www.glps.k12.mi.us Home Page- the first document a user sees when accessing the website- often serves as the index or TOC for other documents and files stored on the site

What are Web Browsers? A program that interprets and displays web pages and enables you to view and interact with it. Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla Firefox, etc. Browsers provide a variety of features, including capability to locate web pages, bookmarking, forward/backward, security settings, etc.

What is HTML? Hypertext Markup Language An authoring language used to create documents on the WWW. HTML uses a set of special instructions called tags or markup to define the structure and layout of a Web document. It specifies how a page is displayed in a browser
