Hypothesis?? Hypothesis: - It is an educated guess or prediction - It is an “if, then” statement - Keep you and I out of it
2
Remember Try to use INCREASE and DECREASE in your hypothesis! Ex. IF I increase the amount of food I give my cat, THEN she will increase her weight
3
An “if” “then” Statement If ____independent variable______, then__dependent variable_______.
4
There are 2 main types of variables: Independent Variable: The variable that is changed by the scientist; the ‘I control’ variable Dependent Variable: The variable that might change because of what the scientist changes – what is being measured Types of Variables
5
Example: Independent Variable: the cat is feed a lot of food Dependent Variable he will get fat If ___________________________ then _________________________

Elizabeth wanted to test if temperature affected how fast milk goes bad and curdles. She left milk in a room temperature closet, a fridge, and a oven that was turned on low heat. She then measured how rotten the milk was after 10 days. IV: ____________________________________ DV: ____________________________________
7
A soap manufacturer wants to prove that their detergent works better to remove tough stains. What is the dependent variable? A. Removal of stain B. Detergent
8
A scientist studying bugs wants to determine if temperature changes how many times a cricket chirps. What is the dependent variable? A. Number of times a cricket chirps B. Temperature
9
You think that a certain part of your brain is important in memory. To test this, you will remove this part of the brain from rats and see if they remember how to get through the maze. What is the dependent variable in this experiment? A) Remembering how to get through the maze. B) Removal of a certain part of the brain.
10
You want to see if playing music makes plants grow taller. What is the dependent variable in this experiment? A. Height of plant B. Music being played
11
You want to measure the effect of different amounts of oxygen on the rate of yeast growth. What is the independent variable? A. Amount of oxygen B. Rate of yeast growth
12
You want to test a new drug that supposedly prevents sneezing in people allergic to grass. What is the independent variable? A. Sneezing B. Grass C. Drug
13
A florist wants to see if Product X will extend the life of cut flowers so that they last longer. What is the dependent variable? A. Life of the flowers B. Adding Product X
