Chemistry Measures Up with your name here
2
What is Chemistry? Chemistry is … the study of the composition and properties of matter.
3
What is matter? Matter is … anything that has mass and takes up space.
4
Matter surrounds us in the form of solids, liquids, and gases. All matter, regardless of its size, shape, or color, is made of particles that are too small to be seen by the unaided eye.
5
Atoms ATOM-the basic unit of matter. ATOM-the basic unit of matter. An atom is made up of 3 parts… An atom is made up of 3 parts… Protron (+ charge) Protron (+ charge) Neutron (no charge) Neutron (no charge) Electron (- charge) Electron (- charge)
6
Elements ELEMENT-the specific name of an atom. An element is distinguished by its atomic number (the number of protons it has).
7
Molecules MOLECULE- made up of two or more atoms that are held together through bonds. MOLECULE- made up of two or more atoms that are held together through bonds. Bonds are attractions between atoms that tightly hold the molecule together.
8
A Simple Molecule Water (H 2 0) 2 hydrogen atoms 1 oxygen atom
9
Another Simple Molecule Ethane (C 2 H 6 ) 2 carbon atoms 4 hydrogen atoms
10
A Polymer… More Complex The polymer “polyethylene” consists of many ethane molecules.
11
What is a Polymer? Polymers are made of many molecules strung together to form really long chains. Polymers are made of many molecules strung together to form really long chains. Polymers can occur in nature or they can be man-made.
12
What is a polymer? These long polymer chains are formed by teeny tiny molecules called monomers. These long polymer chains are formed by teeny tiny molecules called monomers. A single polymer molecule is made out of hundred of thousands (or even millions!) of monomers! A single polymer molecule is made out of hundred of thousands (or even millions!) of monomers!

Today we will… Measure ingredients in a formula. Measure ingredients in a formula. Create a polymer. Create a polymer. Convert fractions to decimals and percents. Convert fractions to decimals and percents. Have fun with math and science! Have fun with math and science!
