DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Changing Matter Changes to Matter > Solutions

Solutions – The Big Ideas A solution is the result of a physical change. A solid dissolved in a liquid forms a solution. When particles of solids are dissolved into a liquid, they become so small that they may seem to disappear. Solutions can be physically separated into their original materials, although it may be difficult.

Solutions – Prior Knowledge Concepts regarding solutions are new to students. It will be helpful for students to review physical changes with the Fun-damental, Things that Change. It will also be if helpful if students have made:Things that Change a drink by mixing water with a flavoring powder (i.e. ice tea mix or lemonade mix).

Solutions – Common Misconceptions All mixtures are solutions. – Reality: Not all mixtures are solutions. A solution is a mixture which consists of particles of one or more substances (the solute) that are distributed uniformly throughout another substance (the solvent). Solid particles disappear in liquid solutions. –Reality: Particles of solids dissolve into a liquid. Although they may appear to have disappeared, the particles do not disappear, but do become very small.

Solutions – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Solutions. Exploration: SolutionsSolutions Reading Passage: A Disappearing ActA Disappearing Act Video: SolutionsSolutions Video: Physical ChangesPhysical Changes Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Solutions – Instructional Ideas Supply each child with a cup of water, a tablespoon of sugar or sugar drink mix, and a spoon. –Have each student smell and taste the water and then the powder. (Note: check your class for allergies and read the ingredients carefully.) –Mix the two together and have them smell and taste it again. –Ask the students what type of change have you observed? –Record all observations in their science journal.

Solutions – Instructional Ideas Read A Disappearing Act as a classA Disappearing Act –Assign groups of students to research solutions in different bodies of water (i.e. ocean, estuary, lake, or river) on Earth. –Have each group report back to the class.

State standards: If you wish to review your state standards regarding Solutions, click here to get to the curriculum standards search feature of DES. http://discoveryeducation.com/forward/curriculum.cfm You can click on any standard to see what resources are available to teach it. Additional Information: For additional content, check the Extend section within the concept.
