2 Tener que / Hay que  Both of these expressions are used to talk about what someone “has to do” or “must” do.  Uds. Tienen que tomar apuntes.  Hay que tomar apuntes en las clases.

3 Hay que is an impersonal phrase meaning there is not a specific subject to the verb “hay”. “one” must… HAY QUE

4 Set up:  Sentence structure  Hay + que + infinitive Remember, infinitives end with –ar, -er, -ir  You have to sweep the floor. (in general)  Hay que barrer el piso.

5 This one is specific to the person that “has to…” Because of this: Conjugate the verb tener for subject Tener que

7 Set up:  Sentence structure  (subject) + tener (conjugated) + que + infinitive Remember, infinitives end with –ar, -er, -ir  You have to sweep the floor. (YOU personally)  Tú tienes que barrer el piso.

8 Práctica  I have to mow the lawn.  We have to water the plants.  One has to make the bed.  Tengo que cortar el césped.  Tenemos que regar las plantas.  Hay que hacer la cama.
