PIDS
5
PIDs Perimeter Intruder detection System Perimeter protection
Starts with Physical deterrents, e.g. a fence or barrier, wall and Gates A layered approach to security is important, Primary security = Physical Fence Detection = PIDs Verification = CCTV
6
PIDs Perimeter Intruder detection System Physical protection
Physical perimeter security is an effective deterrent to intruders with metal fencing being very popular. A determined intruder can defeat most types of physical barrier, usually by cutting through or climbing over. Many electronic security systems focus on detecting intruders either before or after they have entered the property.
7
PIDs Costing and market size High cost Buried cable RADAR
Low cost Buried cable RADAR On fence / microwave infrared
8
Intrusion detection types
9
PIDs Perimeter Intruder detection System Intrusion detection types
IR, (Passive and active) Microwave On fence (micro phonic, Accelerometer, Fibre optic) CCTV analytics Radar Buried cable
10
Intrusion detection types
IR Active infrared or Passive infrared sensor (PIR) Typical Standard Home Alarm type sensors, operate with either emitted IR radiation or from monitoring the change in reflected IR Beams Easily compromised, line of site, short range, binary alarm state Cost £5-£1500 Range 2m – 100m (line of site) Good Home and room security Bad Outdoor, bright areas
11
Intrusion detection types
Microwave Volumetric detection Primary or secondary detection method, detect up to a 3m cylinder.* Cost effective on longer than ~40m lengths. Traditionally difficult to set up* Prone to false alarms* Simple to spoof* * Not HALO Cost £1000-£8000 Range 4m – 500m (linear) Good Long outdoor perimeters Bad Short irregular perimeters
12
Intrusion detection types
On fence Microphonic cable Works by transforming mechanical vibration in electrical Noise. Microphonic cable needs to be installed in a very specific way and cannot be installed to all fences, Gates also need to be buffered to reduce nuisance activation Cost £50 per meter Range 1m – 1000m (linear) Good irregular perimeters Bad Long outdoor perimeter
13
Intrusion detection types
On fence Accelerometer Works by measuring the change in state of a MEMS accelerometer Can be mounted on fences, walls and buildings, individually configurable Cost £70 per meter Range 1m – 1000m (linear) Good irregular perimeters Bad Long outdoor perimeter
14
Intrusion detection types
On fence Fibre optic Works similar to Microphonic on fence cable, measuring the reflection of light in the cable, and as such has more zone accuracy. Expensive to install as cable is expensive, and duplicate data back bone may be required. Highly accurate, and highly sensitive. Cost £150+ per meter Range 100m – 5km Good irregular perimeters Bad Long outdoor perimeter
15
Intrusion detection types
CCTV analytics Video analytics Can be used as a primary detection and verification method all in 1. Scalable Software licences, become expensive to offer full site coverage Eggs in 1 basket solution Cost £600+ Range 50m – 2km+ Good Existing installations Bad Weather.
16
Intrusion detection types
Radar Ground radar 24GHz or 76GHz Ground based Radar, works in most weather conditions. Difficult and expensive to install and maintain, Cost £15k-£50k+ Range 30m – 2km Good Wide open spaces Bad Densely built up sites
17
Intrusion detection types
Buried cable Buried covert outdoor perimeter security intrusion detection sensor that generates an invisible detection field around buried sensor cables. If an intruder disturbs the field, an alarm is declared and the location of the intrusion is determined Cost £?? Range 3m – 800m Good covert, tamper proof Bad Large capital install costs

HALO
19
Introducing HALO Design Philosophy
The Halo has been designed to meet these Key demands : Intelligent: HALO can adapt to changing environmental conditions. intelligently reducing nuisance False alarms Durable: HALO is hardened to operate in tough environments: weather proof temperature tolerant vandal resistant Interoperable: HALO integrates with any system, simply. It provides secure data routing for peripheral sensors. Sensible: HALO offers the lowest cost of system installation in its class.
