The student will be able to calculate the surface area of a rectangular prism 3. Learning Outcome Type of Learning OutcomeEssential PrerequisitesSupportive Prerequisites Cognitive Strategy - Measurement of sides of a rectangle - important dimensions in determining area - Understanding of 3D vs. 2D rectangles - Problem solving skills - Intellectual skills - Attitudes

The student will be able to calculate the surface area of a rectangular cube Using a box of Kraft Dinner, have the students identify the shape Challenge – who can determine the area of all sides in the least number of steps Review how to determine the area of the front face Divide students into small groups; give each group a KD box and ruler Circulate through groups to determine strategies – questions for clarification Have each group demonstrate their strategy on the board for entire class Class discussion – What strategies worked? Didn’t? Why? Evaluate the strategy for correct answer and use of logical problem solving skills Individually, have students repeat activity with cereal box and discuss
