1. Population Population density- how many people live in one area Most populated countries in the world: –China: 1.3 billion people –India: 1.2 billion people –Overpopulation: more people than a country can sustain –Most live in cities

2. Problems with overpopulation Food shortages Unequal distribution of water ENORMOUS amount of air and water pollution from: –Cars –Industrial waste –Biomass fuel used for cooking –350,000-500,000 people die every year (just in China) from air/water pollution

3. Ganges River- India In India, the most sacred and important river is the Ganges River Hindus believe the river cleanses and purifies their bodies of disease Incredibly polluted

4. Yangtze River- China Longest river in Asia- largest water source Divides north and south China, where land and climate is very different Source of irrigation, fishing, hydroelectricity, etc.

5. Problems with pollution Pollution- both rivers are HEAVILY polluted from: –Large scale industrial development (factories dumping chemicals and stuff into river) –Agricultural runoff –Poor waste management –Deforestation- burning down forests –Rapid urbanization
