India and China

Warm-Up  Look at the things you brought with you to school today (clothes, shoes, bags, random items, etc.). List where those products were made.

India and China

1. Population  Population density- how many people live in one area  Most populated countries in the world: –China: 1.3 billion people –India: 1.2 billion people –Overpopulation: more people than a country can sustain –Most live in cities

Population in China

2. Problems with overpopulation  Food shortages  Unequal distribution of water  ENORMOUS amount of air and water pollution from: –Cars –Industrial waste –Biomass fuel used for cooking –350,000-500,000 people die every year (just in China) from air/water pollution

Air pollution

Overpopulation in India

Quick Write  What do you thing are some viable governmental solutions to China’s and India’s overpopulation problem? –Hint: Think diplomatically and realistically…you can’t kill people

3. Ganges River- India  In India, the most sacred and important river is the Ganges River  Hindus believe the river cleanses and purifies their bodies of disease  Incredibly polluted

Ganges River Pollution

4. Yangtze River- China  Longest river in Asia- largest water source  Divides north and south China, where land and climate is very different  Source of irrigation, fishing, hydroelectricity, etc.

5. Problems with pollution  Pollution- both rivers are HEAVILY polluted from: –Large scale industrial development (factories dumping chemicals and stuff into river) –Agricultural runoff –Poor waste management –Deforestation- burning down forests –Rapid urbanization

6. Flooding  Natural causes: monsoons, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc.  Man-made causes: cutting down trees (no roots to absorb extra water), poorly built dams  Results of flooding: death, spread of disease, displaced people, destroyed homes/cities, landslides, etc.  Good: fertilizes soil (sometimes)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11fxiCeFRxM& edu-filter=LxYDxnZFAF3OTqL54BW2nQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11fxiCeFRxM& edu-filter=LxYDxnZFAF3OTqL54BW2nQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11fxiCeFRxM& edu-filter=LxYDxnZFAF3OTqL54BW2nQ

Reading Assignment  http://www.pbs.org/kqed/chinainside/nature/ environment.html http://www.pbs.org/kqed/chinainside/nature/ environment.html http://www.pbs.org/kqed/chinainside/nature/ environment.html  China from the Inside: China’s Environmental Future  Make a chart that explains the obstacles and solutions of environmental issues in China –Note: The issues in China are pretty much the same in every SE Asian country

Discussion Question  China and India can be categorized as the world’s low cost industrial engine. What does this mean? How has their booming and rapidly growing economies come at an environmental cost?

Culture

7. Hinduism  80% of Indians are Hindu (15% are Muslim)  No common founder, holy book, or established set of practices  MOST believe in: –Vedas  set of sacred texts (history of Hinduism and common teachings) –Dharma  common system of values

8. Hinduism beliefs  Karma- Hindu belief that what you do in this life will effect your next life  Reincarnation- Hindu belief that the soul is ‘reborn’ over and over  Your karma effects what place in life you have once you are reincarnated –If you’re a bad person, you’ll have a terrible next life

9. Caste System in India  People separated into groups based on their jobs  Practice started 2,000 years ago  Hereditary groupings- people born into a caste system  could never leave it or move to another group  Based on Hinduism and the belief in reincarnation

Caste System

Hinduism Creation Story  http://samanthawindmillgenesis.weebly.com/ lesson-5-the-hindu-creation-story.html# http://samanthawindmillgenesis.weebly.com/ lesson-5-the-hindu-creation-story.html# http://samanthawindmillgenesis.weebly.com/ lesson-5-the-hindu-creation-story.html#  Respond to focus questions, using the creation story  Create either a detailed timeline of how Hindu’s believe the world was created, or create a storyboard that illustrates the Hindu Creation story

10. Origins of Buddhism  Based on the teachings of the Buddha (“the enlightened one”)  Purpose: to relieve suffering and reach nirvana  Buddhists try to find the ‘path to enlightenment’ by meditating  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZLph_GawII

11. Similarities between Hinduism and Buddhism  Belief in reincarnation  Suffering is caused by greed or wants  Both practice meditation or other forms of enlightenment

12. Differences between Hinduism and Buddhism  In Buddhism, there are no priests (Brahmins)  In Buddhism, anyone can achieve nirvana –In Hinduism, only Brahmins can achieve nirvana –Everyone else must be reincarnated

Quiz Time!  Everything in this section of your notes will be on the quiz!!!  You must study!!!!!!
