How Training Works? 4-hr Training (4 Sections) –Environmental impacts overview –How salt works –Overview BMP’s

How Training Works? 4-hr Training (4 Sections) –Environmental impacts overview –How salt works –Overview BMP’s –Calculate current, Calculate using BMP and compare –End with a Test and Voluntary Commitment

How Training Works? If Individual attends training, passes test and voluntarily commits to implement BMP’s, the individual is given a certification issued by the MPCA.

MINNESOTA POLLUTION CONTROL AGENCY Snow & Ice Control Best Practices Minnesota Pollution Control Agency This is to Certify that has passed the certification examination and has volunteered to apply snow and ice control best management practices for parking lots & sidewalks. Andrew Ronchak, Prevention and Assistance Division Date:

Results Pilot Training Classes held in Fall 2005 and Winter 2006 5 Training Classes held so far in Fall 2006 and Winter 2007 (via 319 Funding) 259 individuals certified voluntarily committing to BMPs

Results –Very positive feedback –Results of in class material application comparing current practices EYE OPENING FOR EXAMPLE…..

Rate reduction calculated in class From an attendee’s parking lot 250,000 sq ft Before training they would typically apply 1,500 lbs of rock salt a day following a storm Training recommends 150 lbs Projected Reductions up to 90%

Rate reduction calculated in class From an attendee’s parking lot 10,000 sq ft Before training they would typically apply 400 lbs of rock salt a day following a storm Training recommends 25 lbs Projected Reductions up to 94%

Real Reductions of 50-75% Ridgedale Mall Parking Lot/ Sidewalks/ Service Roads 80 acres BIG! Before training they would typically apply 10-12 tons of rock salt following a one day storm event Since training they have been concentrating on mechanical removal and are applying 3- 5 tons of rock salt following a one day storm event. They say there is still room for improvement but they are excited about the changes they have tried so far.

Real Reductions of 985 tons University of Minnesota See Attached Write-up for details Reductions since training: 1)Rock Salt – 617 tons (65%) 2)Ice Melt – 80 tons (65%) 3)Sand (w/10% salt) – 288 tons (92%) Savings - $55,071

Manual and Clip Board After Pilots - training manual need identified Second P2 Grant Given to Fortin Consulting Result – Manual and Clip Board –Also available on website: http://www.pca.state.mn.us/programs/roadsalt.html

THE FUTURE & OTHER APPLICATIONS Expand Certification to State, Local and County Roads (in process) Expand to other Northern States Expand to other TMDL Areas (Example: Landscaping Companies for Phosphorus) Questions???
