Rhode Island -founded by Roger Williams Where was he from again? -land peaceably acquired from Indians Named it “Providence” meaning protective care of God (Why?) -based on religious freedoms that Williams promoted -church and the government are separate

During King Philip’s War (Metacom’s War), the Wampanoag and other tribes attacked Providence. Eventually, Metacom/King Philip was killed, beheaded, and his head stayed at the entrance to Providence Plantation for years as a warning to all Native tribes.

Connecticut -founded by Thomas Hooker -Professor from Cambridge -wanted more religious freedom than Massachusetts allowed -disliked the requirement of citizens to be church members -Fundamental Orders first written constitution in the nation- sets up government, rights and powers. Gives more men right to vote and run for office (unlike Mass. Bay- had to be a member of the church)

-William Penn King owed him (his dad) money (2.1 mil) so settled debt with land -Quakers religious group who practiced worship without ministers and were pacifists - Penn’s government included a county comissions and freedom of religion -Philadelphia “ City of Brotherly Love ” -fair treatment of Indians -thriving colony- 6 th most populous state Pennsylvania

Maryland -George Calvert Lord Baltimore -established as safe haven for English Catholics Catholics now persecuted in England due to the Protestant Resformation (Everything flipped!) -Catholics soon outnumbered -Toleration Act guaranteed religious freedom (If you believed in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit- TRINITARIANS) Also outlawed religious hate speech
