9. Use Case – AR9100 The PowerStroke Problem…
Stiction: The “static friction” that needs to be overcome to enable relative motion of stationary objects
Stiction occurs in spool valves inside the fuel injector’s high- pressure oil circuitry due to contaminates or wear, especially during cold starts when oil is thicker and isn't flowing as easily
Engines prone to stiction issues are the Power Stroke 7.3 engine from 1994 to 2003, the 6.0 from 2003 to 2007, the Navistar T444E and especially the VT365 which was manufactured from to 2007, and a range of CAT engines using HEUI injectors.

10. HEUI Injector from 6.0 Powerstroke
HEUI injectors work by using highly pressurized oil to ‘push’ the ‘intensifier piston’ which pressurizes fuel before it is injected
The spool valve opens and closes to allow oil pressure to reach the ‘intensifier piston’ and fire the injector.
When the ‘intensifier piston’ pressurizes fuel to 3100 psi, the pintle retracts and the injector fires fuel into the combustion chamber

11. Spool Valve Stiction
The spool valve in the 6.0l injectors is designed with very tight tolerances, it only moves 0.43 mm
The spool valve is opened and closed by electromagnetic coils
Contamination or wear in the spool valve creates friction, the valve becomes stuck in position, this is stiction!
Cold engine oil is thick and does not flow well. Improper lubrication during cold starts also causes stiction
