Teacher Help How to take a class in with minimal fuss

It is good practice to have a starter on the board or handouts for students to come in and start immediately. These do not have to have anything to do with the lesson but it does encourage pupils to come in quickly, sit down and focus on the task. Eg: Maze games, word searches, anagrams, Word to make in 2 minutes from a sequence of letters. First one done gets positive reward.

How to take a class in with minimal fuss When there is no time to set up a starter, I make sure I am at the door awaiting the class. They should line up if they are Key Stage 3 but if they are higher it is also acceptable to treat them as adults and greet them courteously at the door. “Good morning James, Hello Jenny”, these force students to stop any rowdy behaviour as they enter the classroom and encourages them to calm down. Works well especially after a break. Anyone that has not calmed down is made to wait outside the class until the register is taken and then asked to come in quietly. Thank the students already on task. This is a powerful motivator for them to show better manners next time.

How to take a class in with minimal fuss All your lessons should start with a routine. This helps students know what they are expected to do and clearly shows them who owns the classroom. It can be line up outside, check uniforms (shirt, tie, shoes) They enter quietly and stand behind the chairs until they all are in. Greet them with “Good Morning year 11’s” or “Good Afternoon year 9’s”. They repeat “Good Morning Mrs Cangil”. Release to sit down.

How to take a class in with minimal fuss Make sure if the school rules are that they are to have their planners on their desks that they comply. Note any that do not have any for any reason. Give one verbal sanction (or schools equivalent) Write this on the board or an a sheet of paper (pupils may wipe board if they can!) They are to log on and check for any technical issues on the PC (loose wires, missing mouse, no password) and then start the starter or wait for your demo. (you may occasionally allow then to start their first task depending on the lesson)
