Week: 13 Effect of Controlled Atmosphere Storage on the Quality of Three Fresh Fig Cultivars Adopted from: Carlos H. Crisosto http://groups.ucanr.org/freshfig

Controlled Atmospheres (CA) involves: Reduced oxygenReduced oxygen Increasing carbon dioxideIncreasing carbon dioxide Adding carbon monoxideAdding carbon monoxide Removing carbon dioxide, ethylene and other volatilesRemoving carbon dioxide, ethylene and other volatiles

The Commodity of Its Environment B1 (commodity depends on:B1 (commodity depends on: –Natural dermal system (Epidermis, cuticle, stomata, lenticles)(Epidermis, cuticle, stomata, lenticles) –Added barriers (surface coating, film wrapping) O 2 CO 2 N 2 C 2 H 4 H 2 OHeat B1

The Commodity of Its Environment B2 (package) depends on:B2 (package) depends on: –Permeability of packaging materials –Ventilation opening –Plastic liners O 2 CO 2 N 2 C 2 H 4 H 2 OHeat B2

Conclusions Decay incidence was reduced and delayed by the CA treatment in the three tested cultivars.Decay incidence was reduced and delayed by the CA treatment in the three tested cultivars. In ‘Kadota’, a yellow skin cultivar, CA reduced the “off color” incidence thus, increasing the percentage of sound fruit. In ‘Kadota’, a yellow skin cultivar, CA reduced the “off color” incidence thus, increasing the percentage of sound fruit. As a next step, commercial and practical application of CA-packaging in the fresh fig industry should be attempted. As a next step, commercial and practical application of CA-packaging in the fresh fig industry should be attempted.
