Chapter One - Chemistry Chemistry and You
2
Section 1-1 Introductin Chemistry is called the CENTRAL SCIENCE. – Why? It overlaps with all other sciences in some way. Why study chemistry? – It can be fun! – It is interesting! – It helps explain what takes place in the physical world in which we live, and why!
3
Section 1-2 The Scientific Method The Scientific Method – A systematic way of answering questions about the world we live in. – Steps: 1. Make an Observation 2. Observation leads to a question 3. Thinking about question leads to a hypothesis. – Hypothesis- an educated guess that tentatively answers your question
4
Scientific Method cont. 4. Test the hypothesis with an experiment – Experiment – a carefully devised procedure for making observations and gathering data – Variable- the factor being tested – Control – acts in a predictable way to the experiment – Data is collected throughout the experiment 5. Data is carefully analyzed to form a conclusion
5
More Scientific Vocabulary…… Theories and Laws – Natural Law – describes how nature behaves, but does not explain why it behaves that way. – Theory – Describes why nature behaves based on a natural law.
6
Section 1-3 Safety in the Lab Refer to safety contract and lab techniques file for this information. Remember, you must read and sign the safety material and contract. You are responsible for the lab techniques material.
7
Section 1-4 Measurement Most scientists throughout the world use the Metric (SI) System of measurement. – Why? Base ten system Universal Easy to convert
