4 Steven Riley is a 13 year old boy who has mild to severe Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Steven also suffers from Epilepsy and carries Diastat with him. Steven is enrolling in a Florida school district for the first time, having just moved from Oregon to Florida. Steven’s IEP from Oregon states that all district employees who come into contact with Steven must receive training in the administration of Diastat, in the event Steven goes into an episode in class or on the bus. Your district currently has no students requiring Diastat or training for Diastat administration. How would you handle this situation if you were representing your transportation department in the IEP meeting? You have 5 minutes to discuss.

11 Susan Bailey is a 9 year old third grader at School Bus Elementary School. Susan is blind and is accompanied daily by “Bagel”, a seeing eye dog. Had Susan not been accepted into a special academic program at School Bus Elementary, she would be attending her neighborhood school, Sunset Elementary. There are a total of four students who board the bus at Susan’s bus stop. Of those four students, one is allergic to dogs. The district does not currently have staff, funds, or a vehicle available to operate any additional buses and the bus stop is considered to be isolated on the far outskirts of the city, approximately 47 miles from the school site. Susan has an IEP calling for “specialized transportation” services. How would you handle this situation? You have 5 minutes to discuss.
