Key Concepts 1.Geras = a prize of honor, a particularly valuable token of distinction conferred on a warrior by his peers, e.g. Briseis is Achilles’ geras. 2.Tinê = honor, especially the external, see geras 3.Kleos = glory or fame; that which others say about one, particularly after one’s death. Kleos is what epic conveys upon its heroes.

Judging a Warrior 1.What are his strengths, weaknesses? 2.How well does he measure up to the values of his warrior society? (What are those values?) 3.Where would you place him in comparison with his fellow warriors. Is this Homer’s ideal? How do you know?

Using History to Tell a Moral Tale 1.What happens in the end? Do the events qualify for honor, glory, fame? 2.What is Homer trying to say? Look at his use of irony (Helen’s fate-does she deserve honor?) 3.Did the warriors’ values serve well Homer’s society?
