Individuality You are an individual Learn from others but tailor it to you Look around – who do you want to be like? What path did they take? Have an ambitious plan that includes awareness of the skills you still need to develop Be flexible – plan ahead but also be prepared to grasp opportunities as they arise Opportunity Capability Determination Self-awareness
5
Education & Training Be thirsty for knowledge – develop a skills gap analysis Create in-role opportunities to widen your skills Coaching and mentoring – both directions! IMechE & Other Sources Self Awareness, Team working Leadership, Project Management, Financial skills, Strategy/planning MBA, In-company training courses Use it, practice & develop your skills!

People Management The Hardest thing you will ever do! Essential to be a good leader Most people don’t like conflict and often don’t deal with people issues My advice: Behave consistently - be aware of the impact your actions have on others Lead by example – try not to micro-manage Be as open and approachable possible Address issues directly, quickly and with facts Face-to-face feedback, and in both directions! Never abuse your position of power Take EVERY opportunity to manage or lead people
7
Project Management A great transition for Engineers Often very visible roles An opportunity to manage people and budgets Lead a dispersed team with a wide skills set Learn to lead by influence as well as from a strong knowledge-base An opportunity to shine with a can-do attitude Don’t forget – everybody lies
8
Project Management “The purpose of projects is to manipulate the power balance in the host organisation, often under the guise of legitimate activity.” Colin Gautrey
9
Seize the Opportunity Life cannot be completely planned Take the opportunities that present themselves Take a step back and think broadly – don’t be too narrow Know where to look for guidance & advice You don’t need to know how you are going to achieve something before you know you will make it happen! If you approach everything with enthusiasm and a can-do attitude you WILL stand out
