8 Why Learn these Skills Horizontal and Vertical alignment improves the appearance of a document and make it easier to read. Using the right amount of space between lines and paragraphs makes the pages look better and text easier to read. It is important to achieve the standard page set-up for documents such as memos and letters

9 Vocabulary Words Horizontal Alignment: The position of text across a line in relation to the left and right margins Leading: Line spacing measured in points Line spacing: The amount of white space between lines of text in a paragraph Paragraph Spacing: The amount of white space between paragraphs. Point: A unit of measure used in desktop publishing and graphic design Vertical Alignment: The position of text in relation to top and bottom page margins.

10 Today’s Vocabulary Computer Clock: The clock or calendar built into your computer's main processor keep track of the current date and time. Delivery address: A recipient’s address printed on the outside of the envelope Field: a place holder for data that might change Full block: Style of letter that aligns all lines at the left margin. (no indents)

11 Indent: A temporary left and or right margin for lines or paragraph. Inside address: The recipient’s address typed in the letter above the salutation. Modified Block: A style of letter in which the date, complimentary closing, and writer’s identification starts in the center Return Address: The writer’s address, typically appearing at the top of the letter as well as in the upper-left corner of an envelope.

12 Salutation: The line of the letter that includes the greeting and the recipient’s name “Dear Mr. Doe” Tab: measurement of space the insertion point advances when you press the Tab key. Tab Leader: series of characters inserted along the line between the location of the insertion point when you press the Tab key and the Tab stop. Tab Stop: Location on a horizontal line to which the insertion point advances when you press the Tab key

13 Review Application Skills Pg 115 Lets Practice Indenting Text: – Use Paragraph dialog box – (left, right, First line, hanging) – Use increase or decrease button – Use Page layout tab Be careful using Indents: it should apply to the appropriate text Setting Tabs – Use tab indicator to manually position tab stops on ruler or paragraph launcher to set tabs using specific measurements – Tabs guarantee alignment of text and numbers – Improves visual appearance of document
