Emerging Trends in Educational Technology Nashae Lumpkin Technology as Teaching & Learning Tool
2
Hardware, Software, and System Development Trends Ubiquitous mobile computing o Enabled by cloud-based storage and communications. o Mobile devices in education. More sources of open content o More courses and educational materials that were previously proprietary will now be free and available to everyone online. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) o Makes education cheaper and available to anyone anywhere in the world. Increased e-book/e-text presence o Replacing paper books with electronic books that can be accessed online.
3
Hardware, Software, and System Development Trends (cont.) Tablet computing o Portable device that is easy to handle and can access internet as well as e-texts. Augmented reality systems o Computer-generated environment where a real-life scene is overlapped with information that improves our uses of it. Wearable technologies o Devices used to monitor movements or vitals. Gesture-based computing o Interacting with a computer with body movements using a camera or sensor.
4
Hardware, Software, and System Development Trends (cont.) Games and gamification o Incorporating the most motivational aspects of games into nongame activities. Learning analytics o The ability to detect trends and patterns from sets of performance data across a large number of students. 3D printing o Devices used to print models or actual products when a 2-D image is supplied.
5
Educational Application Trends Flexible learning environments o Students are able to take notes outside of classroom with the assistance of wireless communications and portable devices. Personalized learning o Computer-based management programs that access the students learning needs and provide customized learning experience matched with the student. New instructional models o Students watch downloaded lectures online before attending class. Reliance on learning at a distance o Students are taking virtual classes and learning through virtual programs. Increased educational options for students with disabilities o Advances in technology for increased opportunities for people with disabilities.
6
Increased Educational Options for Students with Disabilities Physical immersion systems and intelligent programs that help people with sensory impairments. Virtual reality is used for people with visual impairments. Assistive technology (AT) is available to assist with many different disabilities Students with difficulty writing can use a AT to write their paper and convert to text.
