Operational Continuity Joint Sustainability Initiative
2
The Joint Sustainability Initiative (JSI) is a multi-association effort of the Concrete Structures Industry supply chain to take unified and integrated action on Sustainable Development
3
JSI members have signed a joint agreement committing to act on 9 Declarations. Declaration #4 addresses 8 Social Values of Concrete Structures http://www.concretejsi.com/about/declaration.HTM http://www.concretejsi.com/about/declaration.HTM
4
Declaration #4: “Our integrated thinking will focus on the following Social Values provided by Concrete Structures”: 1. Resource efficiency5. By-product reduction 2. Safety/protection6. Aesthetics 3. Financial responsibility7. Societal connectivity 4. Operational continuity8. Longevity/durability
5
This presentation discusses Social Value #4: Operational Continuity
6
Operational Continuity What it Means Maintain Essential Services –Police and fire –Hospitals –Communications –Transportation –Military Business Continuity
7
Operational Continuity Why We Need It Natural and Man-made Disasters Construction and Maintenance
8
25% of businesses fail to reopen after disaster Institute for Business and Home Safety
9
How Concrete Helps Concrete structures have proven to withstand natural and man-made disasters.
11
Hurricane and Tornado Resistance Concrete is the leading choice for hurricane and tornado resistant structures
13
Concrete is Fire Resistant History of good performance in fire Non-combustible Low thermal conductivity Maintains cool inner core during fires
14
People, Property and Operations Data vaults for critical material Fire protection systems Electromagnetic shielding
16
Resistant to Terrorism Concrete provides superior protection against military or terrorist attack. Concrete is the material of choice for blast resistance and vehicle barriers.
18
Concrete Roadways are Durable Reduces need for reconstruction Congestion is reduced Congested interchange = $300,000 in lost productivity
19
Business as Usual?
20
Concrete Construction Saves Time
21
Services provided faster Saved 5 months construction time Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
22
Operational Continuity Greater disaster resistant life returns to normal quicker Less disruption and lost productivity for maintenance Services sooner
