Looking Through The Viewfinder Do You See What I See?

Objective Framing a shot Depth of field Controlling motion Camera Mounts

Framing a Shot Aspect Ratio - 4x3 - 16x9 Resolution Field of View -XLS, LS, MS, CU Vectors Composition Psychological Closure

4x3 vs. 16x9 Relationship between screens height and width. 16x9 is becoming the standard 4X316X9

Field of View - Demo Refers to how close the object seems to the viewer, or how much scenery is in the shot 5 Types of Field of View: 1. Extreme Long Shot (XLS) 2. Long Shot (LS) 3. Medium Shot (MS) 4. Close Up (CU) 5. Extreme Close Up (XCU)

Fields of View ECU CU MS LS XLS

Framing – How To Frame People p.98 Bust Shot – From middle of chest up Knee Shot – From knees up Two Shot – Two people in the shot at one time Three Shot – Three people in shot at one time Over the Shoulder – Shows a person over the shoulder of another Cross Shot – Shows a person with the near camera person out of frame

Which Way Did They Go? Vectors – directional screen forces that influence composition 3 Types of Vectors 1. Graphic – created by lines or objects that lead the eye Ex. A skyscraper, road, horizion 2. Index – something that points in a direction Ex. Arrow, someone pointing 3. Motion – created by an object that is moving in a direction Ex. Car traveling in a direction

Composition How the objects or people in a shot are positioned Rule of Thirds

Lots of Rooms – Headroom, Leadroom, Headroom

Lots of Rooms – Headroom, Leadroom Leadroom

The Z-Axis To create depth in the shot, you need to place people or objects along the z-axis Foreground, middleground & background

Controlling The Camera When possible, keep the camera still and let the subject do the moving Avoid constant and fast zooming When you pan, tilt or zoom on a subject, make sure that you “land” on the subject for at least 5 seconds. This is sometimes called “pad”

Camera Mounts - Demo Handheld - Not stable - Mobile Shoulder Mount - More Stable - Must use eye viewfinder Tripods - Portable - Stable

Camera Functions - Demo Focusing – Makes and keeps the image sharp - Auto focus vs. Manual focus - Calibrating the zoom lens Zooming - T= tight or telephoto - W= wide - Can adjust speed of zoom control - DO NOT ZOOM TOO MUCH! White Balancing – adjusting the camera so white looks white - Active white balance switch - White balance every time you change locations

Before You Take The Camera Don’t expose the camera to the elements Secure the camera Use the lens cap Make sure you have the right recording media (tape, cards etc) Make sure you have the necessary cables Test the camera Always capture audio – even if it is with the camera mic
