Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 1 Installation and Technical+Physics Commissioning of DØ RunIIb Silicon & Trigger Upgrades Schedule & Costs R.P. Smith for the DØ Collaboration

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 2 Action Items from July 2004 Review  Understand Clearances for Layer Zero (in 2004 Shutdown)  Incorporate Physics Commissioning in Installation Plans and Schedule  Review Manpower Estimates, articulate needs for extra-DØ help  Provide analysis of Installation Risks + Incorporate new information from L0 and Trigger hardware development teams, 2004 Shutdown experience

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 3 2004 Shutdown Activities Related to Installation  Upgrade Installation “Infrastructure” tasks accomplished during 2004 Shutdown (in CH or MCH) u L1 Cal – None scheduled u L1 CalTrack – begin mods of Muon PDT and Scintillator FEB’s, terminate L1CTT transition and MTCxx cables u L1CTT - install parallel “slice”: crate, controller, few DFEA’s, cables for CTOC, CTT u L2 Beta – None scheduled u L2 STT – None scheduled u L0 Silicon – L0 clearance survey, adapter card and 4-Hybrid SVX4 string, N&S mini fuse panels, new Wiener PS, Interlock chassis u Online – Move Online (DAQ, Oracle, NFS) to new host cluster

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 4 Beam-Off Time Paced by Silicon  Present Installation Schedule shows Tevatron Shutdown Time driven by Layer Zero Silicon Installation u Detector Not Removed From Collision Hall u 2004 Shutdown experiences verifying silicon clearance are leading to reconsiderations of installation plans => Revising existing schedule! u Consideration of each installation step, appropriate (repeated) repositioning of End Calorimeter(s) and installation of precision fixturing, indicates L0 Installation requires 12 weeks. u Resume Tevatron operations in week 13 with opportunity to re-enter CH during L0 technical commissioning. u 14th week required to close detector and make final survey u Workweeks are standard 40 hours, five days u Silicon installation dominates CH access time. Trigger Elements require lesser amounts of CH access in time “shadow” of L0.

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 7 Overall Schedule Dotted Portions: <50% special runs for item

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 8 Installation Effort Workweek = Standard 5 days/40 hrs per week Includes  personnel not presently in D0 Group

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 9 Installation Effort Workweek = Standard 5 days/40 hrs per week Includes  personnel not presently in D0 Group For assumed T 0 this is week of 12/25

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 10 Installation Effort For assumed T 0 this is week of 12/25

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 11 Detector Gap Occupancy Per Gap Limit: 2 For assumed T 0 Tev on-week is obscured

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 12 Identified Additional Manpower Needs  L0 Installation Expert Engineer: Youri Orlov  L0 Installation Expert Instrumentalist: Mike Roman  L0 Installation Expert Technicians: Dave Butler, Dennis Graham  CTT Expert: Jamieson Olson  Two Computer Science Professionals  L1 Cal University Engineers: Dan Edmunds, Phillipe Laurens  Four Electrical Techs for two weeks for PDT mods  Costed in schedule, important to have the named individuals

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 13 Installation Costs  Burdened FY05/FY06 Installation Costs Base FY05Base FY06ContingencyTotal Effort909K296K603K1808K M&S178K52K115K345K Total1087K348K718K2153K

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 14 Installation Risk Analysis  Schedule Risks from Unanticipated Difficulties Encountered during L0 Installation: substantially ameliorated by u 2004 shutdown clearance survey s Experience with survey instruments in gaps s Handling of EC’s and beampipe open-up/reclosing u Careful design of and practice with Installation Tooling beforehand u Involve personnel with previous DØ SMT experience where possible u No second shift or overtime work currently scheduled u MSProject Installation Management Tool  Risk from Accidental Handling Damage to L0 during Installation: substantially ameliorated by u RunIIa Experience u Will develop detailed step-by-step plans for every aspect of the work u Involve personnel with previous DØ SMT experience where possible u No second shift or overtime work currently scheduled See W. Cooper’s Talk

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 15 Installation Risk Analysis  Schedule Risk from prolonged Commissioning of L1Cal: substantially ameliorated by u Careful “non-invasive” handling of fragile BLS cable installation (1280 coax cables under MCH1 floor, >15 years old) u Preparation of BLS/ADF “patch panels” to facilitate reconnection to new ADF’s u Test Site on DAB “Sidewalk” – full system to be operated using collider data input prior to shutdown s Test data at L2 and L3 thoroughly verified s Operating software to be exercised

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 16 Installation Risk Analysis  Schedule Risk from prolonged commissioning of L1CTT: substantially ameliorated by u “Parallel Chain Slice Test” installed in 2004 Shutdown to enable system level operation of real hardware (crate, crate controller, DFEA2’s) u Full test of system software (download, monitor, diagnose) u Test that new hardware loaded with present doublet equations gives identical results to current trigger u Test/optimize (effic. vs rate) algorithms with real data  Schedule Risk from prolonged commissioning of L1CTM: substantially ameliorated by u “Single Button” running in global runs with real production CalTrack boards prior to shutdown

Director’s Review Feb 3-4, 2005 17 Conclusions  Installation Management Team in place  SC-IPC up and running to monitor physics commissioning planning and manpower scheduling  Evolution of Schedule Continues u Tasks detailed to sixth sublevel u Resources (Effort, M&S) loaded u WBS Dictionary and BOE in place u Timeline assumptions depend on availability of identified personnel u Schedule refinements underway as planning evolves  DØ prefers Tevatron shutdown that begins after all upgrade components are ready (to minimize integrated luminosity cost)
